What is a Curbless Shower?

A curbless shower is a type of shower that is designed to be flush with the floor and has no raised lip or threshold. This type of shower is becoming increasingly popular due to its modern look and ease of access. It is typically installed with a pre-fabricated unit that includes a shower pan and drain components. The most common DIY method for installing a curbless shower is to install a pre-fabricated unit complete with shower pan and drain components.

Curbless showers allow for a spa-like retreat with built-in seats and benches, inset shelves and niches, low-profile linear drains, heated floors, and even steam showers. Waterproofing measures are essential in any bathroom, but especially important in a curbless environment.

To ensure correct curbless shower installation, the drain location should be installed at the shower entry as it is the easiest installation for a curbless shower. Additionally, it is possible to install a zero entry shower in a basement, but it will likely cost quite a bit more. []

When building a curbless shower, a carpenter typically would remove the subfloor and cut up to 3 in. off the top of the joists to accommodate a prefab tray, such as in a Schluter shower system, that slopes backward. The joists, in turn, would then be reinforced to regain their structural integrity.
